Topic clusters and topical authority
Covering a subject thoroughly, with well-linked pages, helps readers and search engines. "Topical authority" is a useful idea, but know what Google has and has not said about it.

After this lesson you can
- Design a hub page with supporting pages around one subject.
- Link cluster pages so readers and crawlers can move between them.
- Separate Google's documented statements from industry claims about topical authority.
A single page rarely covers everything a person wants to know about a subject. A topic cluster is a set of pages that together cover a subject thoroughly: one hub page with the overview, and supporting pages that each go deep on one part.
Structure
Hub: Nešiojamų kompiuterių remontas (/paslaugos/nesiojamu-kompiuteriu-remontas/)
├── Ekrano keitimas: kaina ir trukmė (service subpage)
├── Baterijos keitimas (service subpage)
├── Kompiuteris neįsijungia: priežastys (guide)
├── Kompiuteris kaista ir išsijungia (guide)
└── Taisyti ar pirkti naują? (comparison)
- The hub gives the overview and links to every supporting page.
- Each supporting page answers one intent in depth and links back to the hub, and to closely related pages.
- Anchor text describes the target page, as in the links lesson.
What Google has actually said
Why clusters help regardless
Even without any special ranking effect, clusters:
- Give readers a clear path from general to specific, and on to the commercial page.
- Prevent several pages from competing for one intent, because each page has its own job.
- Spread internal links logically, so important pages are well linked.
- Make gaps obvious: a hub with no page on a common question shows you what to write next.
Stay within your expertise
A cluster should grow from what the business really knows. Google lists entering a niche without real expertise, mainly for search traffic, as a warning sign. A repair shop's cluster on laptop faults is credible. The same shop writing about cryptocurrency is not.
Practice
Read the lesson, pass the quiz and do the exercise to complete it.
Knowledge check
4 questions. Get at least 4 right to pass.
Exercise: Design one topic cluster
Choose one subject central to your business. Design a hub page and four to eight supporting pages from your keyword map, noting which exist and which are gaps. Draw the links between them, with the anchor text you would use. Add the missing pages to your Content tab.
Deliverable: A cluster diagram or list (hub, supporting pages, existing or planned) with link directions and anchor text, and the gaps added to the Content tab.
