Rank tracking and monitoring
Rankings are personal, local and volatile, so a single "position" is an approximation. Track trends sensibly, and set up monitoring that warns you before traffic drops.

After this lesson you can
- Explain why rankings vary, and what rank trackers measure.
- Choose between Search Console position data and a rank tracker.
- Set up a basic monitoring routine for a site.
"What position are we in?" is the most common SEO question, and the hardest to answer honestly.
Why rankings are not one number
Two ways to measure position
| Search Console average position | Rank tracker | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Real impressions from real users | Simulated searches from one location and device |
| Strengths | Reflects reality, free, all queries | Consistent daily samples, shows competitors and SERP features |
| Weaknesses | An average over a changing mix, delayed by a couple of days | One sample, not what real users see, costs money for many keywords |
| Best for | Trends for pages and queries | Close monitoring of a few priority keywords |
Do not check rankings by searching in your own browser. Results are personalised and influenced by your location and history.
Monitoring: catch problems early
Traffic drops are much cheaper to fix when caught in days rather than months.
Weekly (10 minutes):
- Search Console Performance: any sharp drop in clicks or impressions compared with the previous week?
- Search Console overview: new issues, manual actions or security issues?
- Key pages load and return 200. Uptime monitoring tools can check this automatically. Many offer free tiers.
Monthly:
- Page indexing report: did the number of indexed pages change unexpectedly?
- Core Web Vitals report.
- Opportunities in your keyword map: import fresh Search Console data.
When something looks wrong:
- Check Google's Search Status Dashboard, which lists ranking updates such as core updates, and incidents affecting crawling, indexing or serving.
- Check your own recent changes (deploys, plugins, robots.txt, redirects), using annotations if you added them.
- Record the problem in the Issues tab with evidence.

Exercise: Set up a monitoring routine
Write a monitoring checklist for your site, with weekly and monthly items. Include Search Console checks, uptime of key pages, and the Search Status Dashboard. Then do the first run and record the results. If you use a rank tracker, choose 10 to 20 priority keywords with a fixed location and device.
Deliverable: A monitoring checklist with frequency, owner and where to look for each item, plus the results of the first run.
